This will probably be the first of many baseball related posts for this season...
The Mets played their division rivals today - the Philadelphia Phillies, and it was a great game pitched by R.A. Dickey, but that is not the reason for this post. During the Second Inning, Josh Thole singled to get on first, then the pitcher R.A. Dickey came up and laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt (moving Josh Thole to 2nd) and was tagged out by Jim Thome. R.A. Dickey starts walking to the dugout satisfied with his plate appearance when the crowd goes wild. He turns to see the Phillies leaving the field and realizes Josh Thole had been tagged out at 1st. For those of you who are unfamiliar with baseball, Thole had been "moved up" by Dickey's sacrifice bunt and would have been good to stay at second. However, for some unknown reason (even to Thole himself), Thole turned and started jogging back to first (everyone speculated that he thought it was a foul ball, but he admitted in an interview after the game that he had seen the ball go fair and was unsure of why he headed back to first). Needless to say, Jimmy Rollins (who many were accusing of tricking Thole on this play, but Thole reassures that Rollins' actions had no impact on his returning to 1st...) caught Cliff Lee's (Philly pitcher) attention, received the ball, then threw it to the 2nd Baseman who was covering first (because of the bunt) who then tagged out Thole desperately attempting to make it back to first. In the post game show, Bobby Ojeda and Chris Carlin said this was probably the only time a scorecard would read - Sacrifice Bunt and then bace runner caught stealing 1st. Usually, actually you can never steal first, baseball just doesn't work that way, especially trying to steal first from 2nd Base.

I know this is probably a boring post, but I think it is pretty hilarious (of course because the Mets won - if they would have lost, this would have been a whole different story...). hahaha, liz. i tried reading this like 3 times, and i was always confused. but i'm glad the mets won. that's what's important right? haha
